  • David asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

    Hi There,

I have just been diagnosed with a raptured ACL (right Knee), MCL tear and Minuscus tear. I am now beening considered for surgery.

I am a keen football enthusiast and want to continue u playing. I idealy want someone who can detail my therapy in such away.

I am also looking for advice as to things i can do prior to surgery to help me recover quicker?

  • The Six Physio Guru responded:

    Hi David

Surgery, for you, is absolutely the only way forward when you've got an "unhappy triad".

Your surgeon may want to wait (if it's acute injury) for 6 weeks to allow the bleeding to stop. This is your perfect window of opportunity to crack on with some prehab.

Firstly ice if its swollen. You'll also really need to concentrate on getting your knee straight if its either not straight (!) or not too painful.

Hamstrings and hammy co-contractions (making both quads and hammys working together) are funnily enough more important that just firing up your quads, expecially through range and isometrically. 1 legged balance work (and glut activation rather than strength) is a must as is keeping your calf muscle in tone.

Have you decided whether or not you'll have a hamstring graft or patella tendon graft?

Any more info? Let me know
