Kneedy Knees

Dec 21, 2011

  • Justin Carrigan asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

Hi, I have recently been told that I have mild arthritis in my right knee. Due to general wear and tare (through running and cycling over the years). I used to run 7/8 miles a day until about a year and half ago - but now it is simply too painful. I have had to substitute running with cycling. I was referred for physiotherapy treatment with the NHS (who simply gave me a sheet of exercises to do), and told me to work on strengthening the quad muscles in my knee to take the stress of the knee. Do you have any helpful advice of on how I could get back running. Kind Regards, Justin

  • The Six Physio Guru responded:

    Hi Justin.

Unfortunately getting stronger does mean getting better. If you've got changes in your knee, then Physio can't do much about that. However, with the right stuff to do Physio can stop it getting worse and most likely make you feel much better. It's not what you do, but how you do it. Simple things like squats and lunges are great as long as they are done with control, form and little or no pain.

Seeing a good Physio would be a great idea as you've most likely got some tight bits which need releasing, but more importantly they'll show you how to move better and keep like that. Gluts are more important than quads in this instance.....
