  • kenny Davies asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

Hello, i have been suffering from extreme knee pain (both knees ) for a numbers of year. I am an ex athlete (basketball) The pain on my right knee seem to be inside the knee but on the outer right hand side. It is extremely painful when the knee is under load and when it is flexed backward - like in a sitting squat or quadriceps stretch. There is also pain behind the knee in this position as well. The pain is the left knee is also "inside" the knee, but seems to be generally localised.

    Hi Kenny.

Thanks, sounds pretty tricky from what you've said. Lots of could be's and maybe's.

Give me few more clues about swelling, injury, etc, etc, things that make them feel better/worse and what you'd like to know.

    Cheers

Thx for the reply. There is no swelling. Both knees have been painful for a while now (over 10years), but the pain on the outside of the right kneecap that seem to get worse when the knee is bent started when i banged knees with someone during a kickboxing lesson.

I am thinking it may be related to the meniscus, as both patella are quite mobile (especially laterally), and some clicking can be heard when i "shake" the knee. Again, this "clicking" is not new. Both knees have been making this noise for quite a while "shaken" (moving leg from side to side). Thanks.

    HI Kenny

If it's meniscal, as you suspect, then best thing is get an MRI scan organised. For you to keep functioning (and enjoying it) this is the start.

If it's patella related - and it may well be as it sounds as if you've got lots of lateral movement, which is not as nearly as important as having good medial patella glide, and control.

Shoes, foot control and gluts should all be at the top of your list. But, get the diagnosis and cause sorted so you know what needs to be done.

    Merry Christmas.
