Bruised shin

Dec 28, 2011

  • Nick asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

2 weeks ago I was kicked in the leg whilst playing 5 a side football.
Very painful and have had a lot of swelling around the shin and down to my foot.
Doctor prescribed Naproxen for the pain, most of the swelling has now gone but I still have quite a large bump on my shin.

Because of this I have not been doing a lot of exercise and I am due to go skiing on 14th January.

Should my leg be ok by then?

  • The Six Physio Guru responded:

    Hi Nick

It's sounds as if you've got a bone bruise - assuming you've been punted right on the bone.

Bone bleeds and bleeds and can remain very sore for a good few weeks and even into months (depends how old you are, where and with what force you were kicked with).

Don't push the lump around, as it really is a bruise and will most likely make things worse not better. Function as pain allows.

Skiing maybe tricky. If your lump on your shin and is on or under your boot line, then unless you modify your ski boots it's gonna be painful. Is boarding in softer boots an option? Failing that try a neoprene compression bandage over the lump to lessen the load.

    Bon ski.
