supraspinatus

April 3, 2014

Hi Guru, i recently got diagnosed with an inflamed supraspinatus muscle in my right shoulder whilst away in italy.

i have had some pain in this area since sept/oct last year but didn’t get it seen to as i thought it would go away.

i have had 3 sessions with a therapist in italy (including massage , acupuncture and ultrasound)

i still have the pain, although it has changed slightly sine starting treatment.

i wish to continue treatment for this ailment but i’m unsure if acupuncture etc is the correct course of action or will massage solve the problem?

do i need to see a sports therapist or physio?

many thanks in advance for your help, Rachel

Hi Rachel

You don’t just wake up with an inflamed supraspinatous – it happens because of something, and until you know why it’ll keep hanging around.

All the treatment you’ve had to date only makes you feel better (and that’s at a push!) but it will not get you better.

You need to see a decent sports physio who can tell you why you’ve got an issue – most common things are a really stiff thoracic spine, a humeral head that sits too far forward, poor control of the muscles around the shoulder (rotator cuff) and around the shoulder blade (scapular stabilisers) – so you’ll need a really good rehab program that jot only provides you with control but also gets you stronger later….

….really sorry for the delay
