Kids needing sports injury treatment on the up

  • Wednesday, 10 March 2010 22:56
A growing number of kids are hurting themselves while playing sports, it has been claimed. Kids needing sports injury treatment on the up

According to experts speaking at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in New Orleans, as kids are playing various sports all year round, without seasonal breaks, they are increasingly needing sports injury treatment.

"This increased exposure means there will continue to be growing numbers of significant musculoskeletal injuries, both [from] traumatic and chronic overuse," said Dr Thomas M. DeBerardino, an associate professor of orthopaedics at the University of Connecticut Health Center who specialises in sports medicine.

He added that even older or professional athletes have "downtimes" to give their bodies a rest and suggested that parents make sure their offspring have a break from sports training.

According to Safe Sport, parents need to consider whether their children are physically and mentally able to cope with team sports before signing them up to such activities. It can also be beneficial to let children try a range if sports before committing to one.
