Acute sciatic relief

January 12, 2014

Mary asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

I have (what appears to be) acute sciatica. Pain on right leg from buttocks almost down to the calf.

I’m taking about 10 Nurofen a day for the pain. Could Clinical Pilates and/or physiotheraphy help? I’m avoiding stretching and am walking as much as I can. Have a sedentary job though.

Hi Mary
.
Go easy – It’s sounds as if you’re taking massive amounts of Nurofen a day.
.
If this is your second episode (or more) of back and or leg pain then I’d definitely get into see a Physio, with or without Pilates at the moment.
.
You need to get on top of your pain, find out why you’ve got it and then deal with the cause. Staying active will help, but don’t let it increase your pain. As you are sedentary make sure you’ve had a good close look at your workstation setup, and move around (especially the top bit of your spine) regularly.
.
Good Luck.
