Abbas asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’ve been suffering from costochondritis for the past 2 years – I have allowed it to rest however it doesn’t seem to get any better, can it be treated and cured by physiotherapy? Thanks.

Regards,

Abbas

Defiantly. But, the cause rather than the symptoms need dealing with.

Your ribs move too much at their attachment to your sternum, hence the irritation and inflammation. This happens because you don’t have enough flexibility in your thoracic spine.

Every time you take a breath in, your stiff thoracic spine make the sternal attachment of your ribs move excessively and become irritated….

Get you thoracic spine moving more – a Physio should be pretty competent at this.
