Hip problem

February 24, 2020

I suffer from pain and stiffness in my left hip. There is little range of motion in the left hip and I get tightness and pain into the thigh and outside of leg. The pain and tightness can be into different areas of the leg and is not constant. When doing a frog stretch I get a clicking noise from the left side which is not sore.

This has been a problem for over 10 years and doctors have ranged from a back problem to hip arthritis, xrays show some signs of arthritis but the issues has not got much worse over the years. I sit at a desk all day which does not help. Do you think this is a hip or back problem?

Hi Brian – depends on what you think is the pain producing structure versus why is it producing pain.

I think the pain you’re feeling is coming from either your hip or the soft tissue that surround your hip.

The muscle get stiff because the hip has too much joint play, rather than range of motion – and they play a protective part, as well as movers.

I think the hip has too much joint play (think of loose hinges on a door) because your lower lumbar spine, like your hip has too much joint play because you’ve got a stiff thoracic spine – which is probably due to your sitting and work posture.

If you can get your thoracic spine to move better and control your hip joint play by improving the control, stability and strength of (primarily) your glutes – you’ll be heading in the right direction.

I’m not convinced that you’ve got hip which is referred from your lumbar spine.

Hope this helps and makes good, decent sense.
