Sciatica in 65yr old

May 12, 2021

I presume this is sciatica – pain from hip down the leg as far as the calf. 65 yrs old. Just get it at night, lying in bed, stops me sleeping.

Have tried exercises seen on internet and also what yoga teacher has given me – they work temporarily but don’t stop it re-occurring. Particularly seems to happen after I’ve been on a long walk in the day (but strangely not after running).

If I visited a physio would it be possible to actually fix this – ie find out the cause and remedy?

Hi Debbie – I’d hope so!

One of the inconvenient truths about stretching is that whilst it might make you feel better, it very rarely actually gets you any better as it doesn’t help identify what the actual problem is.

You’ve given a few clues already – walking’s an issue and running isn’t and this is most likely due to not the muscles work “hard” enough when walking but they do when your running – it’s sounds like you’ve got a stability and control issue and not just tissue that needs stretching or strengthening…

Whoever you end up seeing always make sure YOU understand from them what they problem is and why you’ve got it.

Good luck
