Stephanie had Spinal Fusion 8 years ago so needs greater motion in her thoracic spine

Oct 06th, 2015

I had a spinal fusion operation 8 years ago. I didn’t have any follow up physio etc. In the last few months I have noticed an increasing amount of pain in the middle area of my back normally around the spine area.

If I apply pressure to the area it relieves the pain a lot. What would be the suggested next step?

Hi Stephanie

…..I think you’ve kind of answered your own question! Most people know what’s wrong with them, they just don’t know what to do.

You need to get greater motion in your thoracic spine as it’s forcing you to poke your chin out as a compensation. It’s this chin poking that refers pain into the middle bit of your back.

As long as your fusion is right at the bottom (L5/S1) I think it’s totally fine to lie on a rolled towel for initially 2 minutes, then slowly build up for the next week or so. A bit of Pilates won’t go amiss either – you’ve got to take ultimate responsibility for spinal health and this is a great place to start
