Achilles pain (triathlon)

January 12, 2014

Alexander asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

Dera Guru, Dear Emma,

I’m training for Ironman Frankfurt in July and I’m struggling with my achilles, which hurts after running (not during, after 10-15 minutes warm up).

What can I do additionally –to stop running completely is not an option– to my exercises on stairs like strengthening the achilles?

Many thanks for your feedback, I’m thinking to book some sessions with your sports physio (Emma Terpstra?), but any short term advice is welcome, because I’m fairly frustrated!

Kind regards,

Alex

Hi Alex

I’m sure Emma will help – she has oodles of experience. In the meantime go very easy on stretching (you generally stretch the wrong bits!) improve your single leg balance, and rest on single leg tip toe in a pain free position for 20 seconds. Roll on your calfs with a foam roller and go to town on well controlled lunges and squats.

What are your shoes like versus your foot position?

There is plenty of great stuff that can be done to keep you on track for your Ironman.
