Exercises for achilles tendonitis

October 11, 2017

Could you advise the best exercises for achilles tendonitis?

I am currently standing on a step and stretching out my tendon like that…… i’m not sure it’s helping.

Thank you

Hi Stephanie

Alas doing a simple, sole exercise just won’t cut it when you’ve got an issue with your Achilles, because it depends on what the issue is.

One thing that is absolutely for sure is that stretching is a big no no.

Without knowing is this is a new issue say after a longer or faster or steeper or new shoes run or it’s been lingering around since Spring, then I’d go for some really simple isometric exercise.

This is where you make your calf muscle work without moving your ankle.

Stand on the painful ankle – on tip toe and lower a little. Hold this for 45 seconds, you may feel a little discomfort but no more that this. Then try again but this time with your knee bent a little (generally this is the better bit of rehab to do)

Repeat 5 times and do it 3 times a day.

Find out what has caused the issue with you Achilles and deal with that….
