Rob has foot pain under his ankle

April 24, 2017

After going for a long cycle ride I have been suffering foot pain under and around the rear side of the ankle towards the heel. There was no particular moment when it began to hurt so it seems to have been caused by repetitive strain.

Running, walking and cycling all aggravate this and make it worse. This happened 3 weeks ago and it does not appear to be getting better.

Hi Rob
Sounds plantar fasciitis-y…or at least in that genre.

You’ve overstretched some tissue in your foot, and are not allowing to heal. Every time you load your foot up, your arch (naturally) flattens and stretches the over stretched tissue.

This can go on for months unless you stop the excessive load and allow the tissue to heal. The straw has now broken the camels back!

I’d pump for getting some simple off the shelf orthotics that help keep your foot alignment or at least get your feet into a decent pair of trainers for the next 2-3 weeks. No poking, no stretching,  but try to get better control of your normal foot posture.

Best way to do that is improving your balance. Little (60”) and often during the day.

No short cuts – it takes a while, but it will get better.

Oh, and if things feel like it’s making it worse, then it’s generally making it worse….modify what you’re doing.
