Rosemary seeks advice following a total ankle joint replacement

January 26, 2016

Dear Guru,

Following a total left ankle joint replacement and subsequent problems my muscles are very weak and walking is difficult.

I am 81 and desperate to get really fit again!

Hi Rosemary

Sounds like exactly the right idea.

All your exercises need to be safe and within the range of motion that the surgeon said you can function in.

It’s initially pretty tricky to pick up your strength because you’ll have a stiff and possibly swollen foot, ankle and calf but with some time and a little effort you’ll start to regain some strength.

Best place to start is with your easy to get to, local Physio.

I’m sure I could give you a few names if you let me have your location.
