Sounds like acute plantar fasciitis…

Jan 11th, 2014

oliver folkard asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

Hi there,

I am running a half marathon this Sunday. When I went out for session the other wee, I noticed a slight pain in the inside (bottom of my foot) in line with my big toe and in front of the heel. I have iced it and taken so anti-inflammatory drugs, Anything else you would suggest?

The Guru Responded:

Hi Olly
.
I think this sounds like acute onset plantar fasciitis.
.
Treat yours as you are doing so at the moment. I’d be loathed to tell you stretch your calf muscles at the moment, but if you can get your calf released (on a roller or massage) then do so. Stretching your calf just increases the load through your PF, and it is at the moment an overload or over stretch issue.
.
Try to limit the amount of walking you are doing and don’t even think about running until the half this weekend.
.
If you plan to continue running then you’ll need to take a view on your training (have you done too much of the wrong stuff, or not followed a good regime), have a good look at your running shoes (do they still provide enough support) and have you good lower limb control (what’s you single knee squat like)….
.
All answers for tomorrow.
.
Hope this helps
