Hip Replacement

Jan 10th, 2014

John asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

Hi.

I am 62. On Tuesday I had my right hip replaced. I returned home this morning. I am reasonably fit and very positive.

I need help regaining leg strength and manoeuvreability. I have always liked pilates. What do you suggest?

The Guru Responded:

Hi John

Well done – but don’t do too much too soon.

You’ve had a big op and the outcome is very much dictated by what you do. Stick to the post op protocol you’ve been given. Around the 10 day or 2 week mark as long as there are no complications, as long as you’re sensible you can go a little off piste…

Pilates would be great. Go for control rather than excessive movement. Work on the strength as the control improves. Do ask around so you get someone who has some experience in dealing with THRs.

Static bike is also good as is the pool, as long as your wounds have healed.

Good luck.
