Oowwww shin pain

Marina asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

hello Guru, after a couple of long runs followed by a few short ones the week before last, on Saturday I went for a ten miles and spent the eveing with pain on my lower legs( both) .It felt like stiff shins, but on Sunday I was ok, and excited by the sunny weather off I went again, for 10 km. When I stopped I could barely stand on my right foot.

I have been icing the area and taking iboprufen, as well as using a compressor band at night. On Sunday the area was slightly swallen, now it looks ok, but the pain seems more severe, it hurts whenever I rotate the foot in any direction. It even hurt throught the night, last night. The most painful spot to the touch is still on my lower leg,

I am considering booking an appointment to have it checked, I would like to solve this asap as I am off on holiday next week and I was planning jogging in Italy!Any advise would be graetly appreciated!

The Guru Responded:

Hi Marina
.
How much mileage have you done over what timeframe?
.
Have you had any foot or ankle or hip problems before? New or old shoes? Hills of flat….
.
On the rather ugly face of it this sounds like a stress reaction on the bone surface – something that’ll need initial rest and then finding out why (hence the above questions).
.
I’m sure stretching your calfs would help but is no means a cure. If it hurts when you impact or load it up then I’d rest it until it feels better…Italy or not.
.
Very happy to talk to you on the phone.
