Leg pain/aches – cyclist and runner

January 31, 2014

Jade asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

Hi there,

I am a regular cyclist (mainly commuting about 16 miles a day) and have recently taken up jogging as well, in training for an upcoming event. My lower legs are causing me problems though. I am suffering from what I assume are minor shin splints in both legs, and calf pain/ache in my left leg. It’s hard to pin down the pain but it hurts/aches even when I’ve been resting for 24 hours. I recently bought some fancy new trainers, so it’s not my footwear. I also make sure I stretch a lot before and after getting on my bike or running. Before Christmas I was also suffering with sore knees, but that seems to have cleared up in my 3 weeks off over the holidays.

Should I come and see someone?

Hi Jade

That’s a hell of a lot of symptoms! The issue is you really care about your symptoms and want them to disappear. We respect them, but really want to find out the cause! Treat the cause and say goodbye to your symptoms…

It may be the shoes, it may be too much too soon, it may also be a biomechanics issue which is simple to look at…

It would be great to see you. Harley Street is just up the road!
