Back Pain

January 12, 2014

Tina asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

My partner plays cricket and is concerned about his back. He suffers pain and cannot sit on his bottom and tends to sit on his lower spine. He has tried to sit on the floor with his legs straight in front of him but falls back without support. He is only 26 years old. What can he do?

Hi Tina

Lots!

I think I’d get him to start with the basics. Improve his posture, stand taller and don’t be tempted to stretch out his lower back.

Try the worlds greatest back stretch – roll up a towel as if you’re off to the beach and put it on the floor. Place a pillow at the top to make a “T” shape. Now lie on the towel, running from the nape of your neck to mid back – running up the spine. Heads rests on the pillow and bend your knees, feet flat in the floor.

Lie here for 10 minutes. It must feel good and certainly can’t hurt.

Batting – chest up and don’t slouch.

…..might be worth him seeing someone who can help?
