Taylor asks the Guru about neck pain and lumps at the base of his skull

October 26, 2015

Hi there. I have had issues with my neck for quite some time now. At the base of my skull I have golf ball sized lumps in either side. They feel like muscle knots buy I’m not sure if that’s what they are.

Sometimes the pain gets so bad that I feel nauseous, and cannot move my neck in any which way to get relief.

Not sure if this is simply muscle tension, or if the large lumps may indicate something more.

Thank you

Hi Taylor

The “lumps” are pretty normal.

They are a bunch of muscles that hang out under the base of your skull – they help jut your chin out.

Just like any muscle that gets used a lot they get bigger – your “lumps” are muscles! The issue being is bit necessarily great to have big muscles here, they generally jam joints together making them sore and limit movement because they’ve pulled your skull into the wrong position for good movement.

You need to make these muscles do “less” by making other muscles do more – posture (as always) is key. Stretching your neck without improving your underlying posture make give temporary relief but won’t solve anything long term.

Stand, sit and think tall…..but not stiff!
