Old Shoes?

Maria asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

Hi, i started running few weeks back doing 20mins x 2 daily for few days but starting getting pain the back and inner side of my left calf when i wasn’t running. Odd occasions I would ice and rested doing only general cardio rather than running. No pain but only when I run, i’m not sure what I can do to stop the pain as i haven’t run for good few weeks and only after yesterday running again pain came back. If you can advise as I have an 8k in 6wks time i’m trying to train for. Thanks

Go for the obvious and have a good look at your shoes. Are they worn down, too bendy or pretty old? If so, it’s time for a change. It could be due to the lack of foot control from your current shoes causes your calf to “over stretch” when you’re out running. If you had a structural problem with your calf, it would hurt all the time regardless of activity.

Rest, without finding out what’s causing your problem doesn’t solve too much.

I’m sure your 8k shouldn’t be a hassle – there’s still bags of time.

Good Luck
