Patella-ish type pain whilst training for half marathon

January 10, 2014

Liz asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

New runner (addicted already!) training for silverstone half in March. Odd knee pain below patella, outside left leg. Strange bruise (thin blue line?) around where the pain is – just over the knobbly bit of bone at top of shin. Dislocated that patella twice (last time four years ago, been fine since!) Anything physio could do to save my half marathon?!

Hi Liz
.
Cor, tricky! Is it really tender when you kneel on it? – maybe an insertional issue with your patella tendon. Does it look puffy below your kneecap – maybe your infrapatella fat pad or tendon? Does it hurt if you lock your knee back – fat pad again? Or is it an ITB type issue…..
.
My gut says YES I think a decent physio worth their salt should be able to point you in the right direction and keep you on track for the half…..
