lynn asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:
Hi
I have had a rotator cuff problem for about 8 weeks.
I have had physio and message and it did improve a little. The problem is in my right arm. I have also had a mastectomy. Do you think you can help?
I am very keen to start playing tennis again. Can you recommend the best person to help. I live in central London and I am happy to go to any location. I do have BUPA. I also wondered how much a session costs and how many I might need. Many thanks, Lynn

Hi Lynn
.
It sounds as if you’ve got an impingement , which is pretty common in the shoulder.
.
They can happen due to 2 or 3 things. Firstly a spec of bone grow on under your collarbone at the end which rubs on a muscle that helps to move your shoulder, or this muscle can get inflamed due to unusual over activity (a mad weekend painting the ceiling!).
.
Or, and most likely is that you are moving in such a way that is causing the muscles around the shoulder to overwork and impinge. Posture over a long period of time can influence the way you move your shoulder and use the muscles around it.
.
I think you need the cause identifying and once this is done, it should be plain sailing.
.
The 3rd type is pretty unusual and happens is elite(ish) under 25 year olds.
.
Impingements are bread and butter to us and so anyone, anywhere should be able to help. BUPA fully recognise us [sports injury london clinics], give them a call and we’ll take care of the rest.
.
Any probs, do shout.
