Shoulder pain for 6 months

January 11, 2014

Saheeda Rahman asked The Guru for the following Physiotherapy Advice:

Hello Guru
I’ve had a shoulder pain for about 6 months now- the muscle at the front of my shoulder has a dull pain. It gets worse after my gym sessions- I go 3 times a week. I first started noticing this pain when doing pressups, the pain would go after a while but now after each gym session the pain is there the next day.
Any advice…. thanks in advance.

Hello Saheeda
.
It sounds as if you can’t control where your shoulder (the ball bit) sits in the socket (the shoulder blade).
.
Where you exert force or make the muscle work maximally when getting stronger, you loose shoulder form and the joint rests in the wrong place. The added muscle contraction leads to further joint compression and pain.
.
You need to work on the control of your rotator cuff and your scapula stability. I would worry about trying to push too much or for too long, but I would try to work well, through range with little or no resistance and certainly no pain….
.
Give your self a 2 week break from the gym. Work on your cuff, stability and upper back posture. Then go back, easy at first and progress as pain allows BUT don’t loose the form…..
